FAQ

Hack-a-what?

A hackathon is a day-long invention marathon. Participants work in teams to create awesome projects from scratch, learn new skills and have some fun along the way! All skill levels are very welcome.

Who can attend?

Any enrolled undergraduate or postgraduate student, or graduate less than a year out of university. Students will be required to show their student ID on arrival.

What about under-18s?

Unfortunately not! However, UCLU TechSoc are running a hackday for young people in March, so keep your eyes peeled.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. HackLondon is a free event, with meals provided thanks to the generosity of our lovely sponsors.

How large can teams be?

You can hack with however many people you like! However, only teams of 4 or fewer are eligible to win prizes.

Can I stay overnight?

Sure! We'll have gender-separated sleeping rooms available, but bring some things to make yourself comfortable.

What should I bring?

Your laptop, any electronics you wish to use, chargers, comfortable clothes, toiletries and a sleeping bag or blanket and pillow. And of course, your student ID.

Can I start my project beforehand?

Only projects started at the hackathon will be eligible for prizes, as it would be unfair otherwise.

Will there be travel reimbursement?

Yes! Thanks to our amazing sponsors, we're reimbursing up to £15 of travel costs for each attendee coming to HackLondon from outside of London. You can find the details here.

Is there a code of conduct?

Yes. We follow MLH’s code of conduct, which all attendees, sponsors, volunteers, and staff are required to agree to. We expect all of our attendees to be respectful and considerate of others.
